The Tranquility Treatment explained
When Addiction and Mental Health Overlap
Many people struggling with addiction are also dealing with something else, anxiety, depression, trauma, or another mental health condition, even if it’s never been formally diagnosed. In South Africa, more than a third of people with a substance use disorder also live with another mental health condition. At Tranquility, we don’t just treat the addiction on its own. Our team is trained to look at the whole picture, because treating one without the other rarely works.
We work with all medical aid providers
Fully Licensed & Registered
Tranquility Clinic is a registered rehabilitation facility, formally recognised by South Africa's Department of Health and Department of Social Development, and registered with the Board of Healthcare Funders (BHF). That means every part of how we operate, from clinical care to medical aid claims, is held to a real, external standard. When you choose Tranquility, you're not taking our word for it. You're trusting a facility the country's own health authorities have already vetted.

Our Treatment Approach
At Tranquility we treat the whole person, not just the addiction. Every patient gets a treatment plan built around their own circumstances by our clinical team, drawing on the 12 Step Minnesota Model alongside Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing and psychodynamic therapy. That clinical work sits alongside the things that rebuild a person day to day: group and family counselling, meditation and yoga, nutrition, sport and recreation. With a counsellor-to-patient ratio of just 1:3, none of it happens at arm’s length.
A Programme for Every Journey
There’s no single path through recovery, so we offer three. Our Inpatient Programme runs from 21 days to 3 months, with patients living on-site full-time and supported by our medical detox unit and 24/7 nursing care. Our Outpatient Programme runs 6 to 8 weeks for those who need structured treatment while keeping up with work or family. And our Aftercare Programme picks up where treatment ends, with weekly meetings, ongoing counselling and family support for as long as you need it. Not sure which one fits? Every journey with us starts with a free, confidential assessment, and we’ll help you work it out together.
Our Facility and Environment
Recovery happens faster in the right environment. Our 12,000m² facility in Glenferness, Midrand sits in peaceful green surroundings, away from the noise and triggers of daily life, yet it’s only minutes from Montecasino and easy to reach from across Johannesburg and Pretoria. Inside, you’ll find our on-site medical detox unit and psychiatric care alongside the things that make a long stay bearable: gardens and quiet common areas, a pool, yoga and meditation, sport and recreation, and three nutritionally balanced meals a day. We’re registered with the Department of Health and the Department of Social Development, and affiliated with all major medical aids.

Stories of transformation

The management and staff were very hands on and made extra effort to keep us comfortable and happy. I received the best counseling and care. The group sessions and the meetings helped me to realise that i was not alone and I came to understand the disease of addiction. Apart from the addiction, the most valuable lesson I received was turning my defects of character into assets and once i started practicing them, I became a better person.
The doors of Tranquility were always open to me after I was discharged as a patient. I attended in house meetings and aftercare. If ever I was faced with a dilemma I could either pop in or call and I was assisted, this still stands to date.
My family was also offered and given counseling which enabled them to understand the disease and also get help on trauma that they had experienced from my actions. This in turn, assisted them with ways to help and support me once I returned home.
I am 8 years clean and sober and I am Spiritually strong enough to handle life on life's terms and enjoy my new life. Just for today, one step at a time I am happy, joyous and free 🤗
Thank You Uncle Gibson, Aunty cookie & all the staff for the Genuine love and care you show your patients. Thank you most for the sacrifices you have made to ensure that our lives are saved. Thank you for Life 🙏
God bless you all abundantly 🙏

Frequently
Asked Questions
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
Q1: What types of addiction do you treat?
We treat a wide range of substance addictions including alcohol, cocaine, crack cocaine, crystal meth, heroin, marijuana, mandrax, and prescription medication dependency. We also treat dual diagnosis conditions where addiction occurs alongside a mental health disorder. If you are unsure whether we can help, simply call us and we will advise you honestly.
Q2: Do you accept medical aid?
Yes. We are affiliated to most major medical aids including Bonitas, BestMed, KeyHealth, Discovery, Momentum, and others. Our team will assist you in verifying your benefits and understanding what your plan covers before admission. We also have options for private paying patients.
Q3: What is the difference between inpatient and outpatient treatment?
Inpatient treatment means the patient is based at our Glenferness facility full time for between 24 and 90 days, with all focus placed on recovery in a structured, distraction-free environment. Outpatient treatment is a 6 to 8 week day programme where patients attend sessions during the day and return home in the evenings. Our team will recommend the most appropriate option based on each patient’s individual situation.
Q4: How long does treatment take?
Every recovery journey is different. Our inpatient programme runs from 24 to 90 days depending on the patient’s needs and progress. Our outpatient programme runs for 6 to 8 weeks. After either programme, we strongly recommend participation in our aftercare programme for continued support and relapse prevention.
Q5: What happens after treatment ends?
Discharge is not the end of your journey with us. Our aftercare programme provides continued counselling, group sessions, and relapse prevention strategies to support patients as they transition back into daily life. We also encourage family involvement throughout the process to ensure a strong support structure at home.
