Medical Aid Coverage

Understanding What's Covered, and What Isn't

Your Legal Right to Cover: Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMBs)

Under South Africa’s Medical Schemes Act 131 of 1998, substance use disorder is classified as a Prescribed Minimum Benefit (PMB) condition. This means every registered medical aid scheme, including hospital-only and entry-level plans, is legally required to cover a portion of your addiction treatment. In practice, this typically covers up to 21 days of inpatient rehabilitation per year, which aligns with the minimum length of our Inpatient Programme.

What Medical Aid Cover Typically Includes

PMB cover for addiction treatment generally includes inpatient detoxification and rehabilitation, medical assessments and psychiatric care during admission. Outpatient counselling and aftercare are usually not covered under the legal minimum alone, though some medical aid plans offer additional benefits. Pre-authorisation is required before admission, your medical aid will need clinical motivation from our medical team before treatment begins. To confirm your specific benefits, contact the number on the back of your medical aid card, or reach out to our admissions team on 011 568 5197 or enquiry@tranquilityclinic.co.za, we’re happy to help guide you through the process every step of the way.
